Indeed, “it is not all that glitters that is Gold” they say. Who could have believed that this can be a headline news in the United kingdom.

Last weekend Guardian Unlimited published a detailed list of universities at risk of collapse, thanks to the FOI, it wrote thus:

Two articles, based on information obtained from the Higher Education Funding Council for England under the Freedom of Information Act, named 43 universities on Hefce’s list of colleges at risk of financial failure between 1998 and 2003.

The import of this is interesting in two areas. First, to me as an international student in the UK and secondly, to my fellow compatriots in Nigeria that think it is all glittering and greener in this part of the world or fence.

In this age of globalization, the presence of foreign students has been perceived by universities around the world as an effective instrument in the internationalization of their campuses. Exposing domestic students to contact with international students has served as a strategy to prepare students for living and working in a global community and as a tool in developing global knowledge. It has also helped in overcoming negative attitudes toward other peoples and cultures. In meeting the objective of internationalization of their campuses, US colleges and universities have actively recruited students from all areas of the world.

It was a known fact that international students go to the United States in search of more than an education. They wish to hone their English language skills, to understand the American culture, and to develop friendships with US nationals. However for the most part, foreign students fail to integrate into the mainstream of American higher education and many return to their home countries without meeting their academic or personal objectives. Of those who are able to complete their academic programs, many do not enter into any meaningful participation in American culture.

These are trying times for people of faith in the UK, as the government is subtly wedging an all out war on people of faith. The case of the young schoolgirl and her resolve to wear her ‘purity ring’ against her school’s ban was decided earlier today; and she lost.

It is pertinent to ask then, what manner of government are we running and what allegiance do they owe us as regards protection our pursuit of happiness especially in practicing our faith. On the other hand, if the government is afraid of ‘people of faith’; how about the moral decadence in this society which the practice of wearing things such as purity ring will help to checkmate?

When I checked last the United Kingdom boast of having the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the whole of Western Europe and yet, it just stabbed itself in the back by missing out on this opportunity to save our teenage girls from self-destructing. Should we say more…….?
