Dear Readers,

It is good to seek the best university out of the old generation universities but it is worth noting that all of them are shadows of their old forms. Not one of them has the full characteristics of a university any more. When I left one of those almost 30 years ago and went abroad, I rarely noticed any difference in terms of quality of facilities and faculty. Today, it is a sorry state. In 2002 I took my children to visit my alma mater after so many years of not being there and I was so ashamed by the dilapidation of the facilities. I am also aware that the quality of the faculty has fallen so much so that some students could graduate with good class of degree without working for it. We need to work hard to resuscitate our universities so that they could be reckoned with.

I believe the rating of any Nigerian University should be based on the quality of the teachers and their teaching. Infrastructures are necessary but not very important. From experience, I sincerely believe that what we lack in our Universities is quality in the teachers; a situation where someone is saddled with the responsibility of teaching what he/she knows next to nothing about. I believe our Universities should start making it a requirement for their teachers to garner some years of practical experience before veering into teaching. A situation where you resort to teaching because there are no other options is not good for us. Sincerely I think the worst hit in this practice is in our Engineering faculties where the tutors do not care to go close to the industry for research or some other related experience.
I am presently undergoing further studies in UNILAG and I discovered that a good number of the teachers I have come in contact with are actively involved in practice in their various fields. This is why I believe UNILAG should rank the best.
